Description
Module 4 aims to refresh the concept of Lean Thinking and its associated principles and benefits in the healthcare sector.
This module will:
- outline the differences between value-added and non-value-added / wasteful elements in healthcare processes and how Lean can be used to identify and reduce/eliminate healthcare waste.
- explain how to gain a thorough understanding on patient perspectives in order to accurately define what is value in a healthcare process and
- explain how Lean can be used to deliver value through optimizing process flow and capacity and improving workplace organization
This module is comprised of six units:
- Unit 1: Introducing Lean
- Unit 2: Understanding patient and staff perspectives
- Unit 3: Understanding healthcare value streams
- Unit 4: Optimizing process flow
- Unit 5: Optimizing process capacity
- Unit 6: Workplace organization
Objectives
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
- recall the origins of Lean Thinking and its principles and benefits as applied to healthcare
- recognize value-add and non-value-added/wasteful elements in a healthcare process
- collect relevant data to gain an understanding of what patients perceive as value-added in a healthcare process
- identify the causes and types of variation in healthcare processes
- recognize the differences between demand, capacity, activity and backlog in a healthcare process
- identify the tools used to measure and align demand and capacity in healthcare
- identify the Lean tools and practices used to understand and analyze healthcare value streams, optimize healthcare process flow and capacity and improve workplace organization in a healthcare organization
- use the relevant Lean tools and practices to optimize process flow and capacity in a healthcare organization and improve and sustain workplace order and organization in healthcare
