Lean methodology includes a set of tools, principles, and practices that help healthcare and other organizations improve efficiency, and quality, and reduce waste. This course introduces some key Lean tools and concepts used in day-to-day management of healthcare organizations. It overviews Kaizen, POUS, and spaghetti diagrams, and the everyday use and benefits of these tools in healthcare. The course goes on to discuss perhaps the most important Lean tool – Value Stream Mapping, and how it is performed in healthcare. Next, standard work, 5S, and Visual Management are presented, along with healthcare examples and illustrations. Finally, the course offers a real-life case study involving Leading Edge Associates consultants applying some of these tools at a large primary care clinic to increase its efficiency and productivity, and to meet patient needs. Lean Healthcare White Belt for Nurses This instructor-led cohort delivers the Lean Healthcare White Belt in a live virtual format designed around nursing professionals. Facilitated by experienced clinical Lean practitioners, the program uses healthcare-specific case studies directly applicable to clinical and patient care environments. Delivered in partnership with Ontario Tech University (OTU), recognized toward NEI reimbursement applications. Who this program is for Registered Nurses (RNs) -  Frontline RNs in acute care, LTC, community, and public health settings. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) - NPs leading improvement in primary care or specialty settings. Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs) - RPNs in LTC, community, and hospital settings. This course covers an overview of leadership and change management for successfully deploying Lean in a healthcare organization. Change occurs before, during, and after any Lean implementation. Black Belts are often tasked with a project or program leadership role and leading the change that follows. The course introduces you to key leadership and change management concepts and provides a model, templates, and tools used for successfully implementing Lean projects. Waste can be defined as any element of a process that adds time, effort, and cost but no value. It is estimated that more than 30% of healthcare spending does not add much value for patients, and is considered as different types of waste. Identifying wastes is the first step towards reducing them. This course explores the concepts of value-added and non value-added, or waste, by providing examples of how employee activities can be viewed through the lens of the customer or patient. Gemba is introduced as a method for the identification of waste. The eight types of waste are defined and described.
