Description

This course focuses on the 5S methodology. It outlines the benefits associated with an effective 5S program and provides a detailed analysis and outline of each of the stages involved in its implementation.

As we work through the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, we are now moving into the Do phase. Similar to the last course (Kaizen), 5S is one of the main concepts of improvement events. This means that as you become ready to implement the changes, 5S is one of the strategies you will use. 5S is often used in (but not limited to) a physical environment. That could be a warehouse, print room, workspace, distribution centre, facility, front desk counter, and many other places where there are elements of movement and organization of physical things. 5S has also been applied in virtual environments, such as network file drives, with great success.

Objectives

On completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. define 5S and explain when it is applied;
  2. identify the aims and benefits associated with 5S;
  3. identify the correct order for the stages involved in 5S implementation;
  4. distinguish between the stages of 5S;
  5. identify the deliverables associated with each of the 5S stages;
  6. identify and describe Point of Use Storage (POUS);
  7. identify and describe spaghetti diagrams;
  8. identify and describe appropriate layout improvements for a work area or process; and
